X-Plane sends your simulated aircraft's position, and optionally its traffic, to iFly over Wi-Fi. iFly then flies exactly as it would in the airplane: moving map, plan, plates, terrain and traffic all follow the sim.

There are two parts. Position takes one checkbox in X-Plane. Traffic takes one more step in X-Plane and a receiver setting in iFly. The written steps below cover both, plus the settings the video does not show.

Before you start

• The computer running X-Plane and the tablet running iFly must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
• Close every other EFB or flight app on the tablet. Only one app can claim the connection at a time.
• Turn off the tablet's own GPS for iFly (Step 2). If the tablet's real GPS stays on, it fights with the simulated position and the map jumps between the two.

Step 1 · Set up X-Plane

1. Start X-Plane and load a flight so your aircraft is sitting on the ramp.
2. Open Settings › Network.
3. Under Other Mapping Apps (X-Plane 12) or iPhone, iPad, and external apps (X-Plane 11), check Broadcast to all mapping apps on the network. Leave the other options in that section unchecked for now.
4. Return to the cockpit and give it a few seconds. iFly should find the sim on its own.

Step 2 · Set up your tablet

Turn off location for iFly

This lets the simulated position win over the tablet's real GPS.

• iOS: Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › iFly EFB › Never
• Android: Settings › Apps › iFly EFB › Permissions › Location › Don't allow

iOS only: allow iFly on the local network

Settings › Apps › iFly EFB › Local Network switched on. Android has no equivalent setting.

Find your tablet's IP address

You will need it for traffic in Step 4.

• iOS: Settings › Wi-Fi, then tap the (i) next to your connected network.
• Android: Settings › Connections › Wi-Fi, gear icon on your network, View more, scroll to the bottom for IP address.

Step 3 · Confirm iFly sees X-Plane

In iFly, open Menu › About › Connected Devices. With X-Plane running and a flight loaded, the list should show:

iFly.Adsb.XPlane.XPlaneController

If it is not there, on the same screen choose Wireless Device and make sure Auto-Detect is selected. Then go back to the cockpit in X-Plane, wait a few seconds and check again.

Once it appears, the ownship symbol on the iFly map sits at your ramp position and moves when you taxi.

Step 4 · Get ADS-B traffic from X-Plane

Position is broadcast to every device on the network. Traffic is sent to one address, so X-Plane needs to know which device is your tablet.

1. In X-Plane, go back to Settings › Network.
2. In the same section as Step 1, choose Add connection to Xavion or other EFB (it may be labeled Xavion / FlyQ).
3. Tap the IP Address box and enter the tablet's IP address from Step 2. The port does not matter.
4. Return to the cockpit.
5. In iFly, open Menu › Setup › ADS-B Setup. Start with Auto Detect.
6. If traffic still does not appear after a minute, change the receiver type to a specific GDL90 receiver and restart iFly. Pilots have reported success with Clarity, Stratus III and Stratux / FlightBox. Any of these tells iFly to listen on the standard GDL90 port X-Plane transmits on.

Troubleshooting

iFly never lists the X-Plane controller

• On Windows, the network must be set to Private. Settings › Network & Internet › Ethernet (or Wi-Fi) › Properties › Private network. On a Public network Windows blocks the broadcast.
• Allow X-Plane through the Windows firewall on both private and public. From the same network properties page open Firewall & security settings, or search Windows for Allow an app through Windows Firewall, and check both boxes for X-Plane.
• Confirm the tablet and PC are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network or a phone hotspot on one side only.
• Close other EFB apps on the tablet and restart iFly.

Position shows, but jumps or lags

• Turn off location services for iFly (Step 2). The tablet's real GPS is competing with the sim.

Position shows, but no traffic

• Double-check the IP address in the Xavion / other EFB connection. It must be the tablet's address, and it changes if the tablet reconnects to Wi-Fi with a new lease.
• Switch ADS-B Setup from Auto Detect to a specific receiver (Step 4, item 6) and restart iFly.
• Make sure X-Plane actually has AI aircraft or a traffic add-on running. An empty sky in X-Plane is an empty sky in iFly.
